Which CV template to choose: a comparison
A template merely determines the order of the sections. Error-free content and formatting are more important than the design: In its article ‘How to write a CV: 3 steps and 5 tips’ dated 8 April 2020, the State Employment Centre advises sticking to standard templates and creating ‘a well-structured document, free from spelling mistakes’.
| Template | Who it’s suitable for | Photo | What comes first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | For candidates with work experience | No | Work experience |
| Classic with photo | When a vacancy requires a photo or you wish to include one | Yes | Work experience |
| For your first job | For students and young professionals | Optional | Education, work experience, skills |
| With an emphasis on skills | For candidates changing career fields | No | Skills and achievements |
| Combined | For candidates with experience and strong skills | No | Brief profile summary, skills |
| English-language (CV) | For vacancies requiring a CV in English | As per the vacancy requirements | Summary, work experience |
| For blue-collar roles | Drivers, construction workers, production operators | No | Job title, licences and certificates |
| For managerial roles | For candidates applying for a managerial role | Optional | Team or department results |
Including a photo in your CV is not required and is not prohibited by any law. Versions with and without a photograph are equally valid: please refer to the requirements of the specific vacancy.

How to complete the ‘Work Experience’ section
The Kharkiv Regional Employment Centre advises listing your work experience in reverse chronological order: from your most recent job to your first. Experienced candidates need only list their last 3–5 jobs covering a period of no more than 10 years. Young professionals should describe all their relevant experience, including work placements and internships.
For each role, describe your achievements, not just your duties. The State Employment Centre advises ‘quantifying’ achievements: instead of saying ‘I worked in sales’, state specific figures (by what percentage sales increased).
Structure each line of your work experience using the following format: action → subject → result. Place the verb at the beginning and the result at the end, so that the employer can immediately see your achievements.
Formula: [What you did: launched, reduced, optimised] + [what exactly: process, area, reporting] + [result: how the metric changed or what was created].
Tips for filling in your work experience in different templates:
- Classic and classic with photo: Work experience comes first, so it should be described in detail. Leave one line below each previous role, and list two or three specific achievements under the most recent one.
- For your first job: List all your practical experience: work placements, internships, volunteering and academic projects relevant to the vacancy (specifying specific results).
- With an emphasis on skills and a combined approach: Here, experience serves as proof of your skills. Include details that align with the ‘Key Skills’ section, and omit responsibilities not relevant to the new role.
- For blue-collar roles: Instead of general achievements, be specific: what machinery or equipment you worked on, what tasks you carried out, and what qualifications you hold.
- For managerial roles: Specify the size of the team, your area of responsibility and the department’s overall results, rather than just your personal operational tasks.
- English CV: Maintain a reverse chronological order and a results-oriented approach. Do not translate company and job titles literally if there is an official or established English name.
Do not hide gaps in your employment history behind vague dates: briefly state what you were doing during that period if it is relevant to the role (studies, courses, volunteering).
What the law allows you not to include in the template
Requirements of Ukrainian legislation regarding information in CVs:
| Regulation | What it says | What this means for the template |
|---|---|---|
| Article 25 of the Labour Code | When concluding an employment contract, it is prohibited to request information regarding party and national affiliation, origin, registration of place of residence or stay, and documents not provided for by law | The fields ‘nationality’, ‘residence registration’ and ‘origin’ are not required |
| Part 3 of Article 11 of Law No. 5067-VI | Job advertisements must not contain requirements relating to race, beliefs, gender, age, health status, etc. | An employer may not include such requirements in a job advertisement; the law does not regulate what you should include in your CV — that is your choice |
| Part 1 of Article 7 of Law No. 2297-VI | As a general rule, the processing of data concerning ethnic origin, political and religious beliefs, membership of political parties and trade unions, criminal convictions, health and biometric data | It is best not to include such data in a CV — this is editorial advice, not a direct legal requirement |
| Part 4 of Article 10 of Law No. 2297-VI | Information about a candidate’s private life must not be used as a factor to confirm or refute their professional qualities | Marital status and children must not influence the assessment of a candidate |
By submitting your CV, you grant the employer the right to process your personal data in accordance with Article 11 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On the Protection of Personal Data’.
