When is Advertisers’ Day in 2026
Advertising Professionals’ Day in Ukraine falls on 23 October every year. In 2026, this falls on a Friday, so you can congratulate your colleagues on a working day — either in the office as usual or via a work chat.
| Year | Date | Day of the week |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 23 October | Friday |
| 2027 | 23 October | Saturday |
| 2028 | 23 October | Monday |
In 2027, the public holiday falls on a Saturday, so corporate celebrations should be planned for the Friday before or the Monday after the holiday.
Is this a public holiday and will it be a day off?
No. There is no presidential decree or resolution regarding Advertiser’s Day in the official legislation database. This is an unofficial date of celebration.
Is it a public holiday? No. Unofficial holidays are not included in the list of public holidays and non-working days (Article 73 of the Labour Code of Ukraine), so no separate day off is granted. 23 October 2026 is a normal working day.
Who is celebrated on 23 October
The holiday applies to all professionals involved in the creation, promotion and placement of advertising:
Advertisers
Marketers
PR specialists
Advertising managers and targeting specialists
Copywriters, designers and SMM specialists
The history of the holiday: two versions
Advertising Professionals’ Day has been celebrated since 1994 — this is often mentioned in the media, although there is no primary documentary evidence.
There are two main theories as to why 23 October was chosen:
The ‘first commission’ theory: According to legend, the holiday was initiated by a student named Alan Ardasenov, who worked as an advertising agent. He chose 23 October — the day he received his first advertising commission.
The agency founding theory: According to another theory, the date marks the founding of one of the first advertising agencies by Volney Palmer in the US in the 1840s.
As both versions come from secondary sources, when preparing posts or greetings, it is best to present them as interesting legends rather than as confirmed historical facts.
A brief chronology of the development of advertising
Etymologically, the word ‘advertising’ derives from the Latin reclamare — ‘to shout out’. Key milestones in history:
1612 — the first advertisement was published in the French edition of General d’Affiches.
1841–1842 — the first private advertising agency was founded in Philadelphia (USA).
1876 — the British government launched its first large-scale state advertising campaign, printing a million leaflets.
2 November 1920 — the first radio advert was broadcast in the USA.
1 July 1941 — the first television advert was broadcast in New York: a 20-second advert for a watch costing $9.
The Ukrainian creative sector also enjoys international recognition: in particular, at the Cannes Lions 2018 festival, the Kyiv-based agency Banda Agency won a ‘Bronze Lion’ for its branding of ‘Eurovision’.
What is advertising under the law
Advertising activities in Ukraine are regulated by the Law of Ukraine ‘On Advertising’ dated 3 July 1996 No. 270/96-VR:
‘Advertising — information about a person, an idea and/or a product, disseminated in return for monetary or other remuneration or for the purpose of self-promotion in any form and by anymanner, and intended to create or maintain awareness amongst consumers of the advertisement and their interest in such a person, idea and/or product” (Article 1, paragraph 15).
The Act distinguishes between different types of advertising (outdoor, in-store, comparative, public service, etc.). According to Article 1, paragraph 22, public service advertising is defined as ‘information of public benefit, the dissemination of which is not intended to generate profit’. Covert, misleading and discriminatory advertising is prohibited or strictly restricted in Ukraine.
How Advertisers’ Day is celebrated
On this day, companies often hold themed events, webinars or internal meetings. Even small, friendly gestures are enough to foster corporate culture:
Personal thanks: Send a personal message to your colleagues via the work chat, highlighting specific successful campaigns from this year.
Summing up: Share the results with the team: reach, conversions and sales growth driven by advertising.
Thanking partners: Congratulate your contractors — the agency, freelancers, designers and copywriters.
Sharing experiences: Offer your colleagues a short workshop or pitch session where everyone can share their key takeaways from the year.
Recruiting specialists: 23 October is a great opportunity to post a new vacancy in marketing or creative roles.
